What is Laminar Flow?
Unidirectional airflow at uniform velocity used in ISO 5 environments. Provides first-air protection by sweeping contaminants away from the critical compounding zone.
Unidirectional (laminar) airflow moves HEPA-filtered air across the work zone in parallel streams so that particles generated by the operator or materials are swept away rather than swirling over the critical site. 'First air' — air that reaches the critical site directly from the filter without crossing anything else — is what aseptic technique is designed to protect.
Blocking first air with hands, supplies, or poor material placement is one of the most common aseptic technique failures observed in media-fill assessments and inspections.
