What is VCPR?
Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship: a documented relationship required before a veterinary compounding pharmacy can prepare medications for an animal patient. Required under GFI #256.
A valid VCPR means a veterinarian has assumed responsibility for medical judgments about the animal, has sufficient recent knowledge of the patient, and is available for follow-up. For compounding from bulk drug substances under GFI #256, the pharmacy needs documentation that a VCPR exists behind the prescription.
Veterinary compounding pharmacies typically maintain practice and prescriber records alongside each compound record so BDS-list verification and VCPR documentation can be produced together during an inspection.
