What is C-PEC?
Containment Primary Engineering Control: an engineering control such as a biological safety cabinet (BSC) used for handling hazardous drugs, providing both product and operator protection.
Where a standard PEC protects the preparation from the environment, a C-PEC also protects the operator and the room from the drug. USP <800> requires hazardous drug compounding to occur inside a C-PEC (such as a Class II biological safety cabinet or compounding aseptic containment isolator) located in a negative-pressure room with external exhaust.
C-PECs require the same certification and cleaning discipline as other primary engineering controls, plus deactivation and decontamination steps specific to hazardous drug residue.
